I know exactly what it is like to be a small business owner, where you are expected to be an expert in everything and there are never enough hours in a day. I have been there and now want to help other businesses learn from my experience.  I grew up in a family of farming entrepreneurs and I had to earn my pocket money by serving customers on a weekend from the age of 11.  I was a fast learner and by the age of 15 I completed the VAT returns every quarter.  I was the first person in my family to go to university, and after I went to London where my formal ‘large company’ career started with Arthur Andersen, Dixons & Freeserve in management  & director roles, I worked in the diverse areas of finance, consulting, corporate strategy and consumer marketing & retention.

However, Yorkshire was always home, and I came back to work in our family farm shop where I was able to team my experience up with my passions, and with my brother, developed it into Keelham Farm Shop. Our family business grew from the busy £2m local farm shop to a nationally recognised award-winning multi-site brand with £21m of sales, an online business, hospitality & integrated food manufacturing and a true local food experience. We employed 300 multi-skilled team members, serving a million customers a year and we were innovators in sustainable retail and local sourcing. Keelham was a new concept in fresh food retail and a business that was then built on creating a symbiotic relationship with customers, suppliers, team members, the community & our planet.

I now want to help other businesses grow and develop and learn from my journey, the things that worked, and just as important, the things that didn’t.  I have always had a passion for doing the right thing for our planet and recently I have been leading a project for the Retail Sector Council focussed on making retail more circular, resulting in a project called Green Street designed to help smaller retailers become more sustainable at speed. The platform can potentially help thousands of businesses become greener quickly, acting as a vital catalyst to regenerate our high streets. Please do visit it here at www.greenstreet.org.uk.

Therefore, if you want to grow your business with a real purpose, if you have a new idea that you want help developing of if you want to find out what you need to do and why you should make your business more sustainable then please do get in touch as I would love to help.
